FAQS (Frequently asked questions)

Q: Can parents come watch our kids compete during the contest?

A: Yes! Please come support your child for his/her academic competition!

Q: Where is the contest held on Braddock campus?

A: Inside the auditorium.

Q: Who will be the judges for this contest?

A: We will have 3 parent judges: Andrea Goldman, Ching-Yi Wang and Limo Dai, who are either native Mandarin speakers from China and Taiwan or fluent in Mandarin Chinese!

Q: How many students from each grade will compete for the first 5 places?

A: We don’t know yet. Depending on the registration, the Mandarin Support Committee will decide and inform each contestant if they will need to enter a virtual, preliminary contest on zoom  on Saturday May 20th, 2023 prior to the May 24th, 2023 competition day!

Q: If my child entered the final round of the contest, but I can’t make it to watch and support her on the day of the event at Braddock auditorium, is there another way I can watch the contest afterwards?

A: We’ll try to streamline the whole contest on our All Grades Braddock MI Facebook page LIVE.?? (is it possible?) Stay tuned…

Q: What is the time limit for the contestants of each grade for “Mandarin Bee?”

A: There is no specific time limit for each grade level contest. Based on the virtual Mandarin Bee contest back in May 2020, some contestants failed after 3 or 4 sets of words, some kept going for the whole set of 500 words in their grade level. But we’ll try our best to limit each grade level contest to be completed within 50 minutes. (please also use the proposed schedule time table above as a reference).

Q: Will my child have a chance to review/practice all the words before the contest?

A: YES! And we highly encourage your child to do so in order to FINISH STRONG at the end of the school year! The links of lists of words for each grade level will be posted or sent via email to all contestants by May 17th, 2023 (a week before the competition)!

Q: What if there is a tie between 2 contestants?

A: When the final 2 contestants can both recognize and say the set of words out loud with correct pronunciation and tones back and forth for 5 times in a row, they’ll be provided with a textbook article they’ve been using in class (e.g. Meizhou Chinese) to read out loud for the judges to decide who the champion is.

The contestant who can read the same assigned article in all accurate tones and with better intonation and emotional expression will win the championship.

Q: When is the award ceremony?

A:The award ceremony will be held at the end of each grade level contest.

Q: What’s the red envelope cash scholarship for the top 3 winners?

A: For the top 3 winners of each grade level, he/she will receive a red envelope with cash in it.

     –1st place: $50,

     –2nd place $30,

     –3rd place $20.

Q: Why would the contestant be charged $10 for entry fee?

A: This event is to support the Braddock MI program. All proceeds go to Braddock account under Dragon Sprouts, and it will be used for Braddock’s 2023 Moon Festival celebration in fall!

Q: Will the 4th and 5th place winners receive cash scholarship red envelopes too?

A: Unfortunately no. But they’ll receive medals plus a prize in their choosing, for example: a set of Chinese comic books, a Chinese calligraphy set, cute stationary… etc.

Q: Will my child receive any prize if he/she didn’t enter the final contest (for example, if we have many contestants, and we will have a preliminary virtual contest first)?

A: Unfortunately no. Each contestant will receive a paper certificate for participation if he/she didn’t enter the final round or win the 1st to 10th place. But please continue to encourage your child to keep working on their character recognition by well preparing for their weekly dictation quizzes!

Q: If my child pairs with his/her friend, and they won the first few places, will they each get a trophy or medal?

A: Yes! Your child and his/her teammate will EACH get a certificate, a trophy or a medal if they won the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or the 5th place! HOWEVER, they’ll have to split the cash scholarship in the red envelope. If they won the 6th to the 10th place, they’ll also EACH get a certificate and a mystery goodie bag as a reward.
